Greek Evzonoi border crossing upgraded to ease Macedonian tourist traffic
Greek Deputy Interior Minister Konstantinos Gioulakas announced the installation of additional modular control points and new traffic lanes at the Evzonoi border crossing. The upgrades will split the existing lane into two, creating extra capacity and speeding up vehicle and passenger processing during the summer peak. Gioulakas said, "We are trying to shorten the time needed for control" and noted that the EU directive permits a temporary suspension of biometric registration for third‑country nationals during periods of heavy traffic, a measure that will remain in effect until at least 8 July and may be extended to 6 September.
The measures aim to reduce lengthy queues that regularly affect thousands of Macedonian (and other regional) tourists travelling to Greek resorts such as Halkidiki and Olympian Riviera. Additional cameras and speed‑monitoring equipment have also been installed to improve safety and compliance on the approach road to Evzonoi.
