Greek farmer fined €6,750 for illegal waste burning in Ierapetra

On 13 July 2026 fire‑service investigators of the Lasithi Fire Department imposed an administrative penalty of €6,750 on a farmer in the municipality of Ierapetra, Crete. The fine was issued after the farmer was found burning waste in a fire‑ban period (1 May‑31 October) while strong winds were blowing. The violation was detected during routine checks to enforce anti‑fire legislation, which prohibits waste burning during the designated fire‑prevention season.

The fire service emphasized the importance of complying with fire‑protection measures to prevent wildfires, especially during high‑temperature days. An ongoing investigation by the department’s investigative unit into the cause of a recent fire in the Bramianato area has not yet released its findings.
