Greek fencers finish in top eight at Mediterranean Games

Greek fencers Despoina Georgiadou and Theodora Gountoura concluded their sabre competitions at the 2026 Mediterranean Games in Taranto, Italy, finishing in 7th and 8th place respectively.

Gountoura advanced to the top eight after a narrow 15-14 victory against Italy’s Carlotta Fuzetti in the round of 16. Her run ended in the quarterfinals with a 15-13 loss to the 2026 European champion, Luthia Martín-Portugues. Georgiadou also reached the quarterfinals following a 15-10 win over France’s Alexandra Manga, but was eliminated by Turkey’s Nisanur Erbil with a score of 15-13.

In the men’s sabre event, Panagiotis Kontoideis finished in 15th place after securing one victory in the pool stage against Algeria’s Bounambi. Greek fencing participation continues on Sunday with Andriana Theodoropoulou, Panagiotis Theodoropoulos, and Artemi Tzovani competing in the épée discipline.
