2026 Mediterranean Games competition

The 2026 Mediterranean Games in Taranto, Italy, featured various athletic achievements across different disciplines.

In fencing, Greek sabre fencers Despoina Georgiadou and Theodora Gountoura both reached the quarterfinals, finishing in 7th and 8th place respectively. In the men’s sabre event, Panagiotis Kontoideis secured 15th place.

In swimming, Egyptian swimmer Farida Osman earned a bronze medal in the women’s 50m butterfly. Cyprus’ Kalia Antoniou won the gold medal in the 100m freestyle, marking Cyprus’ first gold of the competition and continuing a streak of winning at least one gold medal at every Mediterranean Games since 2000.

Greece saw significant success in freestyle wrestling, securing three medals. Giorgos Kougioumtzidis won gold in the 86 kg category, maintaining a perfect technical record with a total score of 28-0 and allowing no points to his opponents. Dauren Kourougliev secured gold in the 97 kg category, following a 6-0 victory in the final against Recep Haydari. Azamat Khosonov earned a bronze medal in the 125 kg category after defeating Italy’s Abraham Coniedo Ruano 3-1.

North Macedonia also achieved success in freestyle wrestling. Fati Vejseli earned a silver medal in the 74 kg category, and Recep Hajdari took silver in the 97 kg category. Ahmad Magomedov secured a bronze medal in the 86 kg category following a 10-0 technical victory. In swimming, Macedonian athletes Jovan Jankovski, Stefan Todorov, and Sara Janković competed but did not advance to the next phase.
