Greek FM Gerakoptritis says unilateral sea actions won’t create legal facts, pledges proactive diplomacy

Greek Foreign Minister George Gerakoptritis told parliament that Greece possesses a strong geopolitical footprint and all diplomatic tools needed to protect its national interests. He warned that unilateral actions in the maritime domain do not generate legal facts, stressing that any de‑facto situation could complicate Greek‑Turkish relations.

Gerakoptritis emphasized that Greece’s foreign policy is actively proactive and preventive, noting that the government will not wait for reactions but will “cause the action.” He cited Turkey’s draft legislation on the “Blue Homeland” as a trigger for heightened vigilance, and highlighted Greece’s alliances, participation in international organizations such as the UN Security Council, and its role in regional security and energy exploration.

The minister called for a coordinated response across bilateral, European, and global diplomatic channels, underscoring the need to keep allies fully informed of developments in the Eastern Mediterranean.
