Chania forensic pathologist and toxicologist arrested in Crete corruption probe
On 23 July, police in Chania detained a forensic pathologist and a university toxicology professor on accusations of passive bribery and falsifying forensic and toxicology reports. The two men were charged with eight criminal offences – four for each – including the issuance of false expert opinions intended to influence criminal, civil and insurance cases in exchange for money.
The arrests are part of a wider investigation into a criminal network dubbed the “Mafia of Crete”, uncovered after a large‑scale operation in September 2025 that dismantled a drug‑trafficking and extortion ring in the region. Authorities have linked the pathologist and toxicologist to that organization, which also involved police officers, public officials, a clergyman and other members. Three police officers have been identified as providing information and cover for the group, and further suspects are being questioned. The two accused have been given a deadline to appear before the court on Monday, 27 July.
The case highlights deep‑seated corruption within forensic and law‑enforcement structures in Crete and is expected to continue as investigators map the full extent of the network.
