Greek forensic services scandal expands

Entities: Mafia of Crete · Chania forensic doctor · Anastasios Manioudakis · Forensic toxicology professor · Georgios Doukas

Overview

The investigation into the alleged “Mafia of Crete” continues to widen. After the September 2025 operation that dismantled a drug‑trafficking and extortion ring, authorities have added further arrests and searches.

On 23 July 2026 police in Chania detained a forensic pathologist and a university toxicology professor, charging each with four counts of passive bribery and four counts of falsifying expert reports intended to affect criminal, civil and insurance cases. The two were ordered to appear before a court on 27 July.

The same week, a Chania toxicology professor who had been released on bail on 27 July 2026 faced a €30,000 guarantee, a travel ban and mandatory police check‑ins on the 1st and 15th of each month while a medical examiner received an extended deadline to give testimony.

On 3 August 2026 raids on the offices and homes of a forensic doctor and a local Crete lawyer uncovered computers, mobile phones and a cache of 52 gold pounds, including a 1896 Victoria London pound. Prosecutors are probing whether the doctor’s forensic report in a 2021 fatal workplace accident was illegally influenced, linking the alleged bribery to compensation lawsuits.

Overall, the probe now lists about 20 additional suspects, ties the network to 357 drug transactions and 52 arms sales worth over €238,000, and continues to examine older case files for further evidence of bribery and evidence‑fabrication within the Chania judicial system.
