Greek Government Commits to Acheloos Water Transfer for Thessaly Plain

Greek MP Maximos Charakopoulos told a water‑climate‑geopolitics event that the government’s resolve to divert water from the Acheloos River to the Thessalian plain is now “expressed at the highest possible level.” He warned that future conflicts may be fought over water, citing tensions between Egypt and Ethiopia, and described a “civil war” between Thessaly and Western Greece over the region’s recurring water scarcity.

Charakopoulos said Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, speaking in Larissa, has assigned Deputy Prime Minister Kostis Chatzidakis to oversee the project, promising faster timelines to curb desertification and climate‑related damage.

The proposal aims to alleviate the Peneus basin’s summer dry‑outs and address long‑standing disputes over water allocation between Thessaly and the Aetolia‑Acarnania region.
