The Greek government approved a fast‑track, digitised compensation scheme for residents, businesses and farmers hit by the recent wildfires that burned about 111 000 stremmata (≈111 000 ha) in western Attica and Boeotia, including roughly 46 000 ha of forest. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis ordered the legislation to be presented to Parliament, accelerating the filing and processing of claims. A first‑need grant of €600 per household and a housing repair grant of up to €6 000 for primary homes (50 % for secondary homes) are available, together with a reconstruction subsidy of €1 000 per square metre for “red” houses, capped at 150 m². Rent subsidies of €300‑€500 per month are provided for displaced families. Employees of damaged businesses may have their contracts suspended for three months with a €534 allowance; tax and social‑security contributions are suspended for six months and foreclosures for twelve months. Anti‑erosion and anti‑flood works are slated to start by mid‑September, and the Antinero prevention programme, which has invested €20 million since 2022, is credited with limiting the fire’s spread. The State Agricultural Insurance Agency (ELGA) will compensate affected farmers and livestock owners.
