Greek wildfire relief and compensation efforts
Overview
Following wildfires that burned approximately 111,000 stremmata in western Attica and Boeotia, the Greek government established a fast-track, digitized compensation scheme. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis ordered legislation to accelerate claim processing for residents, businesses, and farmers. The aid package included household grants, housing repair subsidies, rent assistance for displaced families, and protections for employees and businesses, such as suspended tax contributions and foreclosures.
By late August, the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection began distributing the first rounds of financial aid to victims in the Mandra-Eidyllia municipality. The Ministry described the distribution, occurring within 20 days of the fire period, as being completed in “record time.” Officials noted that field assessments were largely completed within the first ten days of August to facilitate these initial payments.
