Greek government launches PosoKanei price‑comparison platform for supermarket shoppers
On 17 June 2024 the Greek government introduced a new digital service, PosoKanei (posokanei.gov.gr), to increase price transparency for household purchases. The platform was presented by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis together with the ministers of Development Taki Theodorikacos and Digital Governance Dimitris Papasteggios, and the head of the Independent Market Surveillance Authority, Despina Tsaggari. It replaces the former e‑Katanalotis system and provides real‑time price comparisons for roughly 8‑10 000 products across the major supermarket chains (AB Vasilopoulos, Lidl, My Market, etc.).
PosoKanei lets users create digital shopping baskets, scan barcodes, view two‑month price histories and, for the first time, compare Greek prices with the average of comparable products in several EU markets (Italy, France, Belgium, Romania, Bulgaria, Cyprus and Spain). Prices are updated daily either by direct data feeds from retailers or by automated web‑crawling. The government frames the tool as a means to curb “akribeia” (price gouging) and strengthen competition, while acknowledging that it alone will not solve inflationary pressures.
