Kostas Katsafados, Greece’s Deputy Minister for Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, said the state will compensate owners of homes destroyed by recent wildfires up to €1,000 per square metre, limited to dwellings of 150 m² or less and without any income‑test criteria.

Applications open on Monday. Claimants must submit the tax‑form E9, the property‑form E1 and a family‑status certificate to their municipality. The first payments will cover a basic‑needs allowance and a housing‑reconstruction allowance. A second round of applications for repair or rebuilding will begin in early September.

Inspections have so far classified 38 houses as “red” (dangerous and to be demolished) and 34 as “yellow” (temporarily unsuitable). For businesses, equipment and machinery damage will be reimbursed at 70 % of the estimated value.

A separate rental‑subsidy scheme provides €300 per month for a single‑person household, plus €50 for each additional family member, up to a €500 ceiling; co‑habiting households receive half the amount.
