Greek government outlines traffic relief projects in Attica

Deputy Prime Minister Kostis Chatzidakis presented three core interventions to ease congestion in the Attica region. The first is a proposed 45‑km bypass of the Kifisos corridor, linking the Athens‑Lamia and Athens‑Corinth motorways via a new Elefsina‑Oinofyta link and intended to divert traffic from central Athens. The project, submitted under the “Standard Proposals” scheme, is estimated at about €500 million but has not yet entered the evaluation stage. The second measure involves new traffic‑management actions on the existing Kifisos artery, while the third is an underground connection between the Kathecha and Vouliagmeni boulevards through a tunnel near Karéa, aimed at relieving the southern Athens axis as traffic to the new Elliniko development rises. The tunnel project, part of the Ilioupoli urban tunnel, carries an estimated cost of €1.2 billion. Chatzidakis also announced upcoming steps on waste‑management reforms in Attica, including recycling targets and waste‑to‑energy initiatives.
