Greek Health Minister Approves Incentives for Chania Hospital
On 2 July 2026 Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis confirmed the acceptance of the General Hospital of Chania’s request to be classified among the health‑desert (agónes) regions. The decision allows the hospital to receive monthly financial incentives of about €600 for doctors (higher for some specialties) and other measures aimed at recruiting and retaining medical and nursing staff.
Parliamentary questions raised on 8 July 2026 highlighted chronic understaffing at the Chania hospital and nearby health centres. Lawmakers cited many vacant positions, emergency‑department waiting times of 8‑10 hours, and reports of staff exhaustion, resignations and overtime, urging the Ministry of Health to fully staff the facilities.
