The Greek government has launched a nationwide compensation programme for people whose homes were damaged by the recent wildfires. Deputy Minister Kostas Katsafados announced that the state will reimburse 100 % of the repair or reconstruction costs for both primary and secondary residences. A €600 grant for basic needs and an additional aid of up to €6 000 for structural replacement or small‑scale repairs are available for primary homes; the amount for secondary homes is reduced by half.

Rental subsidies of €300‑€500 per month will be paid to households whose houses are classified as temporarily uninhabitable (yellow or red zones). Temporary‑housing allowances of the same range are also provided. Businesses whose equipment was damaged can receive up to 70 % compensation, with possible tax and insurance deferrals.

Applicants must submit a request to the relevant municipality within 45 days of the disaster, attaching the engineering inspection report, the latest tax forms (E1/E9), a family‑status certificate and, where applicable, disability‑benefit documentation. A law passed at the end of August will digitise the claims process, allowing online applications and tracking.

The programme also suspends ENFIA property‑tax payments for homes deemed temporarily uninhabitable and foresees further measures after a special session of the State Aid Committee.
