Greek ICU Patient's Organs Donated to Save Lives in Greece and Italy

A 68‑year‑old man from Arta, Greece, was declared brain‑dead while in intensive care at the University General Hospital of Ioannina. His family consented to organ donation, allowing the retrieval of his liver, both kidneys and corneas on the morning of 13 May.

Specialized surgical teams from the Ioannina hospital performed the procedures, assisted by an Italian medical team that travelled to Greece to collect the specific grafts. The transplants were coordinated by the Greek National Transplant Organization, providing life‑saving organs to patients in both Greece and Italy.

Hospital officials praised the seamless coordination and expressed gratitude to the donor’s family for their decision, which resulted in multiple lives being saved through the cross‑border collaboration.
