Thessaloniki to host nationwide labor protest during International Fair
Various labor unions, retiree associations, and worker centers across Greece are organizing a large-scale nationwide protest in Thessaloniki on Saturday, September 5, 2026. The demonstration is scheduled to take place during the Thessaloniki International Fair (TIF), starting at 18:00 near the Venizelos monument, followed by a march.
The protesters are demanding solutions to several socio-economic issues, including the rising cost of living, high housing costs, and the need for VAT reductions on basic food items. Key labor demands include the restoration of the National General Collective Labor Agreement, significant increases in wages and pensions, and improved working conditions to combat worker exhaustion.
Additionally, the organizers are calling for increased funding for public health and education. Some groups have also expressed opposition to current government policies, criticizing the allocation of funds toward military spending and NATO-related objectives instead of social welfare and domestic needs.
