Greek labor union and agricultural protest mobilization

Overview

The Syndicato Protoporia (Private Employees Union of Pieria) has condemned the Greek government for the prosecution of agricultural protesters, livestock breeders, and labor activists. The union accused the New Democracy administration of using “intimidation and criminalization tactics” following the failure to break nationwide agricultural blockades.

In response, various labor organizations, including the Edessa and Almopia Labor Center and the Arcadia Workers' Association, have joined calls for a panhellenic rally in Thessaloniki on Saturday, September 5, 2026. The demonstration is scheduled to begin near the Venizelos monument during the Thessaloniki International Fair (TIF). Protesters are demanding solutions to the rising cost of living, high housing costs, and VAT reductions on basic food items. Key labor demands include the restoration of the National General Collective Labor Agreement, wage and pension increases, and improved funding for public health and education.

The Communist Party of Greece (KKE) is also organizing the large-scale rally, with the Labor Centers of Pella and Piraeus calling for mass participation. KKE General Secretary Dimitris Koutsoumpas is scheduled to deliver a central speech at the Vellidio Conference Center on September 10, positioning the mobilization as a critique of government policies that prioritize corporate profits and military spending over social needs.

Agricultural groups are coordinating a parallel mobilization involving tractors. To prepare, representatives scheduled a panhellenic meeting in Malgara on August 29 to coordinate strategy. The Federation of Agricultural and Livestock Associations of Messinia and other local bodies have highlighted escalating issues such as uncontrollable production costs, unpaid subsidies, and systemic failures that have forced some families to abandon their land.
