Greek lawmaker calls for action against elderly fraud
Evangelia Liakouli, the PASOK - Movement for Change spokesperson for Justice, Institutions, and Transparency, has raised urgent parliamentary questions regarding the rise of telephone and electronic fraud targeting elderly citizens in Greece.
Liakouli highlighted that criminals are increasingly using sophisticated methods, including impersonating police officers, doctors, accountants, or bank representatives. She specifically noted the alarming use of artificial intelligence to mimic the voices of family members to deceive victims.
The lawmaker criticized the government's response, arguing that instead of a coordinated, inter-ministerial plan to protect vulnerable populations, the administration has relied on fragmented communication and unfulfilled promises regarding tools like the 'panic button'. She called for immediate, decisive state action and comprehensive public awareness campaigns to combat these scams.
