Greek New Democracy MPs to face trial over illegal EU farm subsidies

Four members of Greece's New Democracy party are scheduled to appear before the courts on accusations of facilitating illegal management of EU agricultural subsidies. The first hearing, on 2 October, will involve MP Katerina Papakosta before the Third Single‑Judge Court of Appeal due to her legal profession. Subsequent trials are set for 27 October (MP Christos Boukoro), 30 October (MP Maximos Senetakis) and 12 November (MP Kostas Skreka) at the Three‑Judge Criminal Court.

The European Public Prosecutor's Office alleges the four MPs engaged in ethical facilitation in breach of trust and in illegal handling of EU funds, with additional accusations against Papakosta for falsifying a certificate and attempted computer fraud. The investigation, launched in 2021, targeted 22 individuals, including former senior officials of the OPEKEPE agency and political staff, but only the four MPs proceeded to trial. The rapid scheduling follows a new justice‑ministry rule aimed at expediting such cases.
