Greek Left Coalition criticizes Mitsotakis over fuel measures
Giorgos Balatsoukas, deputy spokesperson for the Greek Left Coalition, has criticized Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis regarding recent fuel measures. Balatsoukas argued that the government's approach fails to address the underlying model driving high prices and avoids confronting corporate superprofits.
The opposition representative claimed that instead of taxing the excess profits of refineries, the current government measures provide increased state subsidies that pass through the refineries themselves. Balatsoukas proposed four specific alternatives to reduce fuel costs: implementing a cap on refinery profit margins, imposing an extraordinary tax on new superprofits, reducing the Special Consumption Tax to the minimum EU-allowed level, and lowering VAT on fuel to 13%.
