Greek Mayors Praise Firefighters Amid Athens and Farsala Wildfires

Athens Mayor Haris Doukas posted a message of support on 2 August, thanking firefighters, volunteers and civil protection personnel for battling a blaze that threatened the capital. He highlighted the seriousness of the situation, linked it to the climate crisis and noted that the municipality had already sent water tankers to the affected area. Doukas wrote, “Καλή δύναμη σε όσους επιχειρούν στα πύρινα μέτωπα. Είμαστε μαζί σας.”

In the nearby town of Farsala, Mayor Makis Eskiglos also thanked the fire service, aerial units, police, regional authorities, volunteers and local farmers for their rapid response that prevented the fire from causing greater damage. He warned that “ο κίνδυνος πέρασε, αλλά δεν υπάρχει περιθώριο εφησυχασμού,” stressing the need for continued preparedness as the climate crisis heightens fire risks.
