Greek Minister Akis Skertses Urges Greater Investment in Fire Prevention After Recent Wildfires
Minister of State Akis Skertses praised the efforts of firefighters, pilots and civil‑protection professionals who battled the recent wildfires that swept parts of Greece. He noted that, while no civilian lives were lost, several emergency responders died and their families deserve the nation’s gratitude.
Skertses said the highest tribute to the fallen is to continuously strengthen prevention, training and equipment for civil‑protection services. He linked the need for stronger safeguards to the ongoing climate crisis, which makes summer fire seasons increasingly severe, and referenced the tragic 2018 Mati fire as a reminder of the stakes.
The minister called for sustained public investment to reduce the risk of future national tragedies.
