Greek Minister Announces 80 Extra Police for Athens Foot Patrols

Public Order Minister Michalis Chrysochiodis said that from the end of September the police will add about 80 officers to the foot‑patrol units operating in central Athens. The reinforcement aims to make the patrol service more effective, improve cooperation with residents and businesses, and boost the sense of safety in neighbourhoods.

The minister presented performance data from the past year, noting a 17 % drop in citizen complaints to the rapid‑response call centre and a 27 % rise in police arrests in the area. He said the situation is "better now" but warned that any lapse in security could allow crime to rise again. The announcement was made at an event of the Athens Chamber of Commerce, where senior police officials were honoured for their work.

Chrysochiodis pledged continued effort against crime, emphasizing strong political will and increased operational capacity to serve the public, businesses, children and the wider community of Athens.
