Domna Michailidou, Greece’s minister for Social Cohesion and Family, announced a package of measures to address the housing shortage. The government will build the first 2,000 social‑housing units on public land in partnership with the Ministry of National Defence, using EU funds. The renovation programme “AnaKainiso” will fund up to €36,000 per household, with the state covering 75 %–95 % of the costs. The online application platform closes on 31 July for owner‑occupied homes and on 31 August for closed houses; about 77,000 eligibility certificates have already been issued (roughly 70,000 for owner‑occupied homes and 7,000 for closed houses).

In parallel, the ministry is expanding the relocation programme that began in Evros to at least eight more regions, and it has signed 2,000 agreements for the “Ntanades tis Geitnias” (Neighbourhood Nannies) programme, involving 4,000 mothers and 2,300 nannies. A childcare voucher scheme will allocate €393 million to support 170,000 children, with applications closing on 5 August. Income thresholds are waived for large (polytēknes) families, and the program’s budget and eligibility rules have been adjusted to increase access.

These initiatives aim to increase the nation’s housing stock, improve living conditions for vulnerable families, and support parents returning to work.
