Greek Minister Vasillis Kikilias opens desalination plant on Amorgos
On 29 July, Greek Minister of Shipping and Island Policy Vasillis Kikilias inaugurated a new desalination unit in Katapola, Amorgos. The plant can produce 1,050 cubic metres of drinking water per day, a step the minister said addresses the islands’ water‑resource challenges amid climate change and rising tourism. He pledged continued state support for island infrastructure, especially during the winter months.
Kikilias also shared a video of a scuba dive in Amorgos’s waters, urging protection of the marine environment. He highlighted the “Amorgorama” programme—clean‑coast zones and sustainable fishing measures backed by a presidential decree, EU funding, and scientific guidance. The initiative is coordinated with the Coast Guard, police, fire service and armed forces, and enjoys the Prime Minister’s backing.
