Greek Ministry allocates €12.5 million to boost livestock bio‑security in 13 regions

The Ministry of Rural Development and Food (UPAAT) announced an additional €12.5 million for the 13 administrative regions of Greece to reinforce bio‑security measures against epizootic diseases. Deputy Minister of Rural Development and Food Thanasis Kavvadias sent letters to all regional governors urging the rapid deployment of disinfectant equipment such as footbaths, decontamination mats and spray rigs to protect animal holdings.

The funding is intended to cover operational costs for the new measures and to create a nationwide protective network, especially as neighbouring countries report new animal disease cases that raise the risk of cross‑border transmission. The programme aims to safeguard the livestock sector, farmers’ incomes and the national food supply.

The initiative underscores the government’s priority to strengthen the resilience of Greek animal agriculture amid a heightened regional epidemiological situation.
