Greek Ministry moves to permit shooting events during fire season and seeks social criteria for firefighter placements

The President of the Hellenic Olympic Committee, Isidoros Kouvellos, met with Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Minister Evaggelos Tourna and the head of the Greek Shooting Federation, Thanasis Papageorgiou. The discussion resulted in a revised decision that allows the preparation and holding of national and international shooting competitions during the anti‑fire period, provided that all fire‑protection measures are strictly observed.

Separately, MP Andreas Poulas submitted a parliamentary question to Minister Tourna requesting the introduction of objective social criteria for the initial posting and transfer of firefighters serving in Special Forest Fire Units and tenure firefighters. The proposal calls for priority placement for parents of three or more children, large families, and firefighters who are custodians or legal guardians of persons with severe disabilities, citing constitutional and legal obligations to protect families and vulnerable groups.
