Greek Deputy Prime Minister Kostis Chatzidakis Announces 40% Cut in Bureaucracy via Responsible Statements

The Greek government has enacted Law 5293/2026, an initiative led by Deputy Prime Minister Kostis Chatzidakis, to replace 25 frequently required documents with a single responsible statement. By integrating the change into the electronic MITOS platform, the reform simplifies 1,007 of the roughly 2,500 administrative procedures recorded in the system – about 40 percent. It is expected to save an estimated 42.5 million documents every year.

The measure applies horizontally across 32 public agencies and directly affects 622 citizen‑related procedures and 385 business‑related procedures. Documents that will no longer need to be presented include criminal‑record extracts, degree titles, tax and insurance confirmations, proof of permanent residence and other common certificates. Citizens and enterprises will instead rely on the responsible statement, while the relevant public services will verify the information against existing databases.
