Greek MP demands protection for livestock farmers affected by zoonotic diseases

Evangelia Liakouli, a PASOK-KINAL Member of Parliament for Larissa, has submitted a parliamentary question demanding immediate action from the Ministry of Rural Development and Food to protect livestock farmers affected by zoonotic diseases.

Liakouli highlights that mandatory culling of entire herds has caused unprecedented economic and productive pressure on the Greek livestock sector. Beyond the loss of animals, farmers face significant challenges in maintaining their rights, accessing pastures, and receiving planned subsidies.

The lawmaker emphasizes the plight of farmers who lost their livestock over a year ago and still lack the ability to rebuild their herds. She is calling for a clear regulatory framework or a special joint ministerial decision to recognize these losses as force majeure, thereby ensuring that affected producers can maintain their rights and continue their productive activities.
