Greek MP Thanasis Papathanasis calls for constitutional overhaul in parliament

New Democracy MP Thanasis Papathanasis addressed the plenary of the Hellenic Parliament, urging a comprehensive constitutional revision to safeguard the interests of future generations. He argued that the Constitution must evolve beyond a single government term and adapt to contemporary challenges such as artificial intelligence, the climate crisis, housing pressure, faster justice, more efficient state operation and stronger institutional accountability.

Papathanasis highlighted specific proposals, including article 86 to shift a substantial part of pre‑trial procedures to the courts and ensure ministers are not above the law, article 90 to entrust judicial leadership to a special parliamentary committee without executive interference, and article 103 to embed performance evaluation of public servants. He also stressed reforms for regional development, support for the primary sector, enhanced local government autonomy, fiscal decentralisation and greater public consultation in budgeting.

The MP criticised the opposition party PASOK’s stance, describing it as political opportunism, while presenting the constitutional amendment as the highest institutional undertaking of the Republic.
