Greek municipalities face mandatory AI regulatory compliance

Greek municipalities face mandatory regulatory obligations regarding the use of Artificial Intelligence under Law 5321/2026, which implements the European Union AI Act (Regulation EU 2024/1689). These legal requirements must be met by December 31, 2026.

Existing AI tools used by local authorities—such as citizen service chatbots, waste management route optimization systems, and digital recording tools for municipal council meetings—must be officially registered in a state registry. There is significant concern regarding a lack of awareness among mayors and IT department heads concerning these compliance duties. Failure to adhere to these regulations poses a risk of legal complaints to the Hellenic Data Protection Authority.
