Greek officials clash in Parliament over wildfire management

A heated confrontation occurred in the Greek Parliament during a meeting of the Production and Trade Committee regarding a bill for state aid following natural disasters. The debate centered on the management of recent wildfires, specifically the fire in Agios Vasileios, Boeotia, which reached Porto Germeno.

Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Evangelos Tournas stated that the situation in Boeotia was a “copy of the Mati situation” due to the difficult terrain and limited access points, but noted that immediate evacuation orders prevented a larger tragedy. He also highlighted the unprecedented scale of wildfires across Europe caused by the climate crisis.

Zoi Konstantopoulou, president of the Plevsi Eleftherias party, accused the government of inadequacy, citing a record number of deaths and burned areas. She challenged the Minister's claims regarding evacuation orders, citing resident testimonies that warnings arrived too late. The exchange turned personal when Tournas accused Konstantopoulou of “systematic bullying,” to which she responded by questioning his leadership style.

Konstantopoulou further alleged that wind turbines were responsible for triggering the fires.
