Greek officials promote regional energy and maritime cooperation

At the Southeast Europe Energy Forum in Thessaloniki, Cypriot Minister of Energy, Commerce and Industry Michalis Damianos emphasized the necessity of regional cooperation to ensure energy security, reduce costs, and enhance competitiveness. Damianos highlighted the importance of collaboration between Southeast European nations, including Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, and North Macedonia. He noted that Cyprus, as the southeasternmost member of the EU, could play a significant role in regional energy dynamics, particularly with the prospect of becoming a natural gas producer by 2028. He also underscored the strategic partnership with Greece and the importance of the 3+1 framework involving Cyprus, Greece, Israel, and the United States.

Separately, Greek Minister of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy Vasilis Kikilias discussed expanding investment and technological cooperation with Japan during the 90th Thessaloniki International Fair. Kikilias pointed to the strong existing relationship in the shipbuilding sector, where Greek interests frequently order new vessels from Japanese shipyards. He expressed interest in expanding this partnership to include coast guard expertise and operational vessels. Furthermore, he noted the importance of bilateral cooperation within the International Maritime Organization (IMO) regarding maritime fuel policies and the transition to new regulatory environments to avoid economic impacts on energy costs and inflation.
