Greek OPEKEPE EU Corruption Probe Charges Four Governing Party MPs

The European Public Prosecutor's Office (EPPO) has opened criminal proceedings against officials linked to the OPEKEPE agricultural subsidy scheme, alleging a pattern of corruption and misuse of EU funds. Four governing‑party members of the Hellenic Parliament — Kostas Skerkas, Christos Boukōros, Maximos Senetákis and Katerina Papakosta — have been stripped of parliamentary immunity and face charges ranging from breach of duty in the management of European grants to false certification and attempted computer fraud. The Greek parliament approved the EPPO’s request to lift immunity for eleven MPs on 24 April 2026, enabling the investigation of alleged offenses committed in 2021.

The fast‑track judicial process aims to bring the cases to trial by November, while political leaders debate the scandal. Government officials stress that “no one is above the law,” whereas opposition figures accuse the ruling New Democracy party of using the affair for political gain. The controversy underscores tensions over EU oversight of national subsidy programs and the accountability of senior political figures.
