Greek opposition parties clash over private debt and inflation

Greek political parties are engaged in intense debate regarding private debt regulation and the rising cost of living ahead of the IMF review.

PASOK-KINAL has criticized the government, accusing the Ministry of Finance of misrepresenting the party's stance on creditor rights. Spokesperson Kostas Tsoukalas argued that the government is prioritizing the interests of funds over citizens facing seizures and auctions. Meanwhile, SYRIZA has proposed legislation to overhaul private debt management, including the abolition of bankruptcy laws and the protection of primary residences, labeling the debt surge a ‘time bomb’ for the Greek economy.

On the issue of inflation, PASOK-KINAL challenged the effectiveness of recent agreements between the government and supermarkets to lower food prices. Tsoukalas noted that food costs have risen significantly under the current administration and called for structural changes, such as reorganizing the Competition Committee and reducing VAT on essential goods, including baby formula.
