Greek opposition rejects 3 billion euro defense deal with Israel

Greek opposition parties have criticized a military agreement between Greece and Israel known as ‘Achilles Shield’. The deal, valued at approximately 3 billion euros, involves the establishment of a multi-layered air defense system in Greece.

The SYRIZA party argued that the agreement increases Athens' dependence on the Israeli government, citing Israel's actions in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank. The party questioned whether the deal enhances Greece's strategic autonomy or integrates the country further into a US-Israeli missile and aircraft defense framework. SYRIZA also raised concerns regarding the lack of transparency and the financial burden on Greek taxpayers.

The Communist Party of Greece also condemned the deal, describing it as a dangerous step toward military readiness and involvement in imperialist plans aligned with the United States and NATO. The party warned that such strategic relations with Israel could escalate regional tensions, specifically regarding disputes between Greece and Turkey in the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean seas.
