Greek opposition sparring over OPEKEPE scandal as elections near

Greek parliamentarians from New Democracy (ND), PASOK and the Greek Left Alliance (SYRIZA) are intensifying accusations of misconduct surrounding the OPEKEPE procurement case ahead of the upcoming elections. ND deputy Notis Mitarakis said the European Public Prosecutor confirmed that a citizen’s request in the case was lawful, that his office took no illegal action and that he was unaware of the matter, rejecting any expectation that PASOK would apologize. He stressed his role as a “first advocate of the citizen” and called for political debate based on arguments rather than personal attacks.

The government, led by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and its spokesperson Pavlos Marinas, responded by urging opposition parties to apologise for what they describe as “scandalising” the public. They highlighted recent court rulings that archived charges against nine ND ministers or MPs while referring four for further investigation. SYRIZA, meanwhile, framed the issue as a test of “integrity”, defending its own record while accusing the government of past corruption. The dispute underscores the growing emphasis on honesty and accountability in the pre‑electoral climate.
