Greece faces teacher shortages at start of new school year

The start of the new school year in Greece is marked by significant teacher shortages and logistical challenges. The Teachers' Confederation of Greece (DOE) reports over 8,500 vacancies in kindergartens and primary schools, with more than 5,000 of these specifically in parallel support services. DOE President Nikos Vourdoumpas criticized the government's education policy, describing it as a conscious effort toward degradation and commercialization.

In response, the Ministry of Education has stated that current school coverage is above 85%, with approximately 15% of positions remaining unfilled. General Secretary Giannis Papadomarkakis announced that a second phase of recruitment, involving approximately 6,500 substitute teachers, is scheduled for completion by the end of September to address these gaps.

Additional issues reported include school transport difficulties in regions like Corfu and a declining student population in areas such as Ilia. Special education services also face severe shortages in staff and infrastructure, impacting the ability of many children to attend school.
