Greek Parliament holds second vote on constitutional revision

The Greek Parliament is conducting a second vote on a proposal for constitutional revision submitted by the New Democracy party. The proposal includes amendments to 33 articles, notably aiming to remove the Parliament's role in preliminary investigations of ministers, allow non-state higher education institutions, and potentially remove tenure for public employees.

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has advocated for a modernized constitution to reflect current social and technological changes, while criticizing the opposition, particularly PASOK, for refusing to reach a consensus. The outcome of this vote will determine the parliamentary majority required for the next constitutional assembly.

In response, the Confederation of Public Employees (ADEDY) has organized a work stoppage in Attica and a protest at Syntagma Square. Labor unions expressed concerns that the revisions could lead to the commercialization of education and health, and the erosion of job security for public servants. ADEDY has announced further actions, including a nationwide day of action planned for October 1.
