Greek public sector labor disputes

The Greek Confederation of Public Employees (ADEDY) has initiated a series of actions and criticisms regarding public sector compensation and economic policy. In late August 2026, ADEDY announced a protest at the Ministry of Finance in Syntagma. The union demanded the reinstatement of 13th and 14th month salaries, significant wage increases to address the cost of living, the abolition of the solidarity contribution, and the restoration of the salary scale. They also called for the recognition of private sector experience and permanent staff recruitment to fill organizational vacancies. By September 2026, the labor confederation condemned government economic announcements made during the Thessaloniki International Fair. ADEDY criticized a proposed one-time gross bonus of 500 euros to be distributed over 18 months, arguing such measures fail to combat inflation. The organization further stated that the projected 2027 wage increase amounts to ‘less than one euro per day’ and accused the government of prioritizing military spending and corporate subsidies over health, education, and social welfare. Following a meeting of its Executive Committee, ADEDY announced further industrial actions in response to recent statements from the Prime Minister. On September 16, a work stoppage is scheduled in Attica from 12:00 until the end of the shift to coincide with a parliamentary vote on constitutional reform, followed by a mass gathering at Syntagma Square at 13:00. The union expressed dissatisfaction with government measures, specifically citing concerns that proposed amendments to Articles 16, 79, and 103 could lead to the commercialization of education, the constitutionalization of fiscal restrictions on pensions and social benefits, and the removal of permanent employment status for civil servants.
