Greece renames Hellenic Growth Fund as National Development Fund

The Greek government announced that the Growth Fund, previously known as the Υπερταμείο, will be renamed the National Development Fund (Εθνικό Αναπτυξιακό Ταμείο). Minister of Finance Kyriakos Pierrakas said the change signals a shift from merely managing public assets to actively driving national investment and development, adding that the fund now holds a portfolio of about €12.3 billion across eleven key sectors. Opposition PASOK criticised the rebranding, arguing that a new name does not guarantee better protection of public wealth or transparency, and called for stronger parliamentary oversight of the fund’s operations. The party urged the minister to disclose criteria for asset selection, the removal of the fund’s supervisory board, and the allocation of 50 % of revenues to public debt repayment. The debate highlights differing views on how the renamed institution should contribute to Greece’s economic recovery and public‑asset management.
