Serres fire in Oinoussa village under control, two suspects arrested

A wildfire broke out in the Oinoussa area of Serres on 10 July 2026 after a vehicle left the road, producing sparks that ignited dry vegetation. Strong winds spread the flames across agricultural and forest land, prompting an emergency alert (112) and the evacuation of residents toward New Souli. More than 70 firefighters, 24 fire‑engine trucks, helicopters, and two fixed‑wing aircraft were deployed, with additional support from neighboring fire departments in Thessaloniki, Kavala and Drama. The local mayor reported that “a huge mobilization and good coordination” helped prevent the fire from reaching nearby houses.

The blaze is now under partial control. Police from the Fire Service’s arson‑investigation unit have arrested two Greek nationals, aged 34 and 17, who are accused of causing the fire through negligence. They are being held pending prosecution. Authorities noted that, between 1 January and 10 July 2026, 551 administrative fines totalling €715,085.08 and 176 arrests have been recorded for fire‑related offences, with 92 % linked to negligence.

Firefighters continue to monitor the area to fully extinguish remaining hotspots while the investigation proceeds.
