Greek police boost helmet checks, log thousands of violations
From 20 to 26 July 2026 the Greek police intensified the nationwide "Zero tolerance for non‑use of helmets" campaign. Over the week 20,110 traffic checks were carried out, resulting in 2,494 recorded violations for not wearing certified helmets – 2,227 by drivers and 267 by passengers of two‑wheelers and light electric vehicles.
The new Road Traffic Code (Law 5209/2025) backs the campaign with stricter penalties: a €350 fine and a 30‑day licence suspension for motorbike drivers who do not wear a helmet, the same fine for passengers, and a €30 fine for drivers of electric personal transport vehicles. Regional data show 31 violations in Epirus, while in Central Greece 790 checks produced 29 violations (25 drivers, 4 passengers). Police officials say the aim is to change driver behaviour and protect lives, not merely to collect fines, and the force will maintain a strong road presence.
