Greek police bust €4.5 million subsidy fraud ring in northern Greece
On 26 May 2026 Greek police carried out a coordinated raid across Thessaloniki, Serres, Kilkis, Athens and Kavala, arresting 17 members of an organized crime group that had illegally obtained about €4.5 million in agricultural subsidies from the OPEKEPE agency. Six of those arrested were identified as leaders. The investigation, which began in November 2025, showed the ring had operated since 2019, using false statements and fabricated documents to claim funds meant for genuine farmers. Members came from unrelated occupations such as cleaners, truck drivers and shop staff, and the scheme exploited gaps in the subsidy‑application process to divert EU and national funds.
Authorities have charged the suspects with organized crime, fraud, falsification of certificates and money‑laundering, and have seized the illegally obtained subsidies.
