Greek Police Expand Helmet‑Use Crackdown, Log 1,501 Driver Violations Nationwide

The Greek Police continued their national "Zero Tolerance" campaign against helmet non‑use, entering its 50th week of operation. From 8 – 14 June 2026 the traffic services carried out 19,171 checks across the country, issuing a total of 2,372 fines for helmet violations.

The checks recorded 1,501 violations by two‑wheel drivers and 170 by passengers, plus 680 infringements involving light personal electric vehicles and 16 ATV‑related offenses. Regional figures showed the highest numbers in Attica (762), the South Aegean (428), Crete (208), Thessaloniki (176) and Western Greece (165), while Epirus reported only 27 violations.

Under the new Road Traffic Code (Law 5209/2025) offenders face a €350 fine and a 30‑day license suspension for both riders and passengers, with repeat offences penalised more severely. Users of electric personal vehicles receive a €30 fine. The police stress that the campaign aims to embed a safety culture rather than merely collect fines.
