Greek police conduct helmet enforcement campaign in Thessaly and Central Macedonia

Greek police have conducted a series of targeted traffic inspections across Thessaly and Central Macedonia as part of the ‘Zero Tolerance for Non-Use of Helmets’ campaign. The operations, which took place between August 10 and August 16, 2026, aimed to increase compliance among motorcycle riders, passengers, and users of light electric vehicles (EPΗΟ).

In Thessaly, authorities conducted 1,037 checks, resulting in 104 violations. These were distributed across Larissa (37 violations), Magnesia (37 violations), Trikala (15 violations), and Karditsa (15 violations). In Central Macedonia, covering regions such as Imathia, Kilkis, Pella, Pieria, Serres, and Chalkidiki, 678 checks led to 73 violations, primarily involving motorcycle riders and light electric vehicle operators.

The campaign emphasizes that the goal is not revenue collection but changing public perception regarding the necessity of certified helmets as a life-saving measure. Under the new Highway Code (Law 5209/2025), penalties for non-compliance have been strengthened, including fines of 350 euros and a 30-day driver's license suspension for motorcycle riders who fail to wear a helmet or ensure passenger safety.
