Greek police conduct helmet safety inspections in Thessaly and Peloponnese

Greek police authorities have conducted extensive road safety inspections across the Thessaly and Peloponnese regions as part of a nationwide ‘Zero Tolerance for Non-Use of Helmets’ campaign. Between August 3 and August 9, 2026, law enforcement focused on ensuring compliance among motorcycle riders and light electric vehicle operators.

In Thessaly, police performed 1,093 checks, resulting in 66 violations across Larissa, Magnesia, Trikala, and Karditsa. The violations included non-use of helmets by motorcycle drivers, passengers, and light electric vehicle operators.

In the Peloponnese region, authorities conducted 1,319 inspections across Argolis, Arcadia, Corinthia, Laconia, and Messinia. These actions led to 73 recorded violations, including 49 for motorcycle drivers, 10 for light electric vehicle operators, and 14 for passengers.

Under the updated Highway Code (Law 5209/2025), failure to wear a helmet by a motorcycle driver or a failure to ensure passenger safety carries a 350-euro fine and a 30-day driver's license suspension. Non-compliance by passengers or light electric vehicle drivers also incurs specific fines. Authorities stated the campaign aims to change driver perception and promote helmets as a vital life-saving tool rather than a mere accessory.
