Greece police dismantle $8 million cryptocurrency fraud ring

Greek police have dismantled a large-scale criminal organization involved in a cryptocurrency investment fraud scheme. The operation, coordinated by the Katerini Police, resulted in the arrest of 17 individuals across various Greek cities, including Patra, Larissa, Thessaloniki, and Mytilene. Notably, nine of the arrested individuals are members of the military, with two non-commissioned officers allegedly playing leading roles in the organization.

The group operated a pyramid scheme using a digital platform named FXO and legitimate-looking corporate structures to attract victims. They promised exceptionally high, low-risk returns, specifically claiming investors could double their capital within 50 days. The scheme reportedly recruited at least 10,000 people, with total inflows estimated at approximately $8 million.

During the coordinated police raids, authorities seized approximately 300,000 euros, electronic devices, data storage units, and various documents. The investigation indicates the organization had been active since at least 2025, using fake AI-related associations and social events to build credibility with potential targets.
