Greek police enforce helmet safety campaign across multiple regions
Greek police are conducting a widespread “zero tolerance for non-use of helmets” campaign across several regions to improve road safety and ensure compliance among motorcyclists and light electric vehicle users.
In the Ionian Islands, between September 28 and October 4, 2026, authorities conducted 671 checks across Corfu, Zakynthos, Kefalonia, and Lefkada, resulting in 180 violations. Specifically, Corfu recorded 68 violations. These infractions involved 154 drivers—including motorcyclists, light electric vehicle operators, and ATV users—and 26 passengers.
In the Thessaly region, police conducted 1,191 checks during the same period, issuing 143 violations. The breakdown included 82 violations in Larissa, 28 in Magnesia, 20 in Trikala, and 13 in Karditsa. Most violations in these areas involved light electric vehicle operators.
Under the new Road Traffic Code (Law 5209/2025), penalties have been strengthened. Motorcyclists failing to wear a helmet face a 350-euro fine and a 30-day driving license suspension. Passengers also face a 350-euro fine, while light electric vehicle operators face a 30-euro fine for non-compliance.
